My motherboard is the ASRock 970 extreme3 R2.0
here is a link featuring my motherboard on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/ASRock-Motherboard-970-EXTREME3-R2-0/dp/B00C15B2DQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1434231530&sr=1-1&keywords=asrock+970+extreme3+r2.0&pebp=1434231542378&perid=1D17D6F0524241E48836

The graphics card i will get if it is compatible is the EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC 2GB GDDR5
The link to this card is here:

I would like to know if these are compatible, and how to know if a graphics card and motherboard is compatible for future knowledge. Thank you for your time.

Solution
It most certainly is compatible. Should have no trouble whatsoever.

Graphics card with have a requirement listed as a PCI Express slot. GTX 960's are compatible with PCI-E 3.0 x 16 (PCI Express 3.0 is backwards compatible with PCI Express 2.0). Your board has a PCI-E Express 2.0 x16 slot and is therefore compatible with any graphics card that requires a PCI Express 3.0 x 16 slot.

Hope this helps.

But should those of us with older Mobos with PCIe 2.0 even consider a mid-range card like that? All the reviews and benchmarks are based on PCIe 3.0. Would we be better off looking for a PCIe 2.0 card?

For example, I have a GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Mobo with a XFX HD-487A-ZHFC Radeon HD 4870 card. I'm looking for OpenGL 3 support and was considering an EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti SC 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card for $105, which is PCIe 3.0. On the other hand, I can get OpenGL 3 support with a $47 MSI N720-1GD3HLP GeForce GT 720, which is PCIe 2.0.

With mid ranged cards, even something like the GTX 980 you will never see a difference. Right now, there is no real benefit from having PCIe 3.0. Maybe if you're running Tri-Sli and have a processor that won't bottleneck it comes in handy. Seeing as how I have no experience with that kind of money in tech, I wouldn't know. You can read this for a second opinion. Hopes this helps.

I got the Geforce GTX 750ti and am rocking. No problems installing and no compat issues. Also gave me a chance to dust the inside of my chassis.
