What CPU's Cooling Fans are Compatible with my HP Pavilion and New Mobo?

I currently have this stock HP Pavilion p7 1205 (http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-p7-Desktop-PC-series/5187022/model/5192583/document/c03154964/) and I'm in the middle of changing out motherboards. When I took out the old motherboard's CPU fan, I saw that it had a backplate that's glued to the pre-installed motherboard. Now I need to find a compatible CPU fan that fits with in the Pavilion case and fits on my new motherboard, a Biostar H61MGV3(http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=638). The new motherboard is a little bit smaller than my old one so I'm not sure if a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo will be able to fit either the mobo or case. This is my first time changing out computer components and the motherboard. I just need something that can fit and work relatively well for my moderate gaming life.

First thing, since you are changing the motherboard don't be surprised when the computer won't boot. Changing the motherboard usually requires a fresh install of the operating system.

To determine what CPU cooler you can use, you will need to measure the clearance from the top of the CPU to the side of the case. Height is usually the limiting factor. Once you have the clearance in mm then you can compare that to specs for coolers and find one that fits.

In your opinion, how much of a clearance is safe enough? I'm checking the height dimensions and an HP Pavilion case has a width of 6.89 in and the 212 hyper evo has an height of 6.3 in, not including being attached to the motherboard. It may fit, but it sounds too close. I feel like I need to be in the safeside. I don't know a lot about fan sizes so I'm wondering what is a decent fansize for a PC like this. From what I measured, the OEM fan is 80mm.

I have purchased a cooler and had it not fit (too tall). I just ended up having to purchase another. The best answer I can give is to have the motherboard and CPU installed and measure. Lay a yard stick across the side of the case and measure down to the top of the CPU. I recommend a metric ruler because the heatsink height is usually specified in mm. Take your measurement and subtract a couple mm. That is your limit.

Instead of a 212 evo, which has a 120mm fan you may have to search for something with a 90mm or 80 mm fan to get the height down.
