Please see this thread before all.

so i decided to re clean the thermal paste from both surface and reinstall the cooler cause the temp difference between core0 and others is now almost 10c for peak temperature .So Can i use nail polish remover ( acetone ) to clean the thermal compound over my hyper 212x heat pipes' direct contact area(square shape)? I could not found more than 90% alcohol or isopropyle in any shop. Please help me asap and any suggestion is most welcome .

Just as that guy has been wiping his with a cloth for years and leaving a layer of the old compound, I am a bit more of a thorough person myself and personally I've been striping mine clean for years. So over the years I have tried various solvents to ensure my heatsink block was shiny and compound free. My personal preference is Denatured Alcohol but there is nothing wrong with the 90% Isopropyl alcohol although you'll probably have a harder time getting the compound off as it's not the best stripping agent. Ok so i have used acetone in the past and it works good but dries a bit to quickly, I am sure you are aware of the destructive nature of acetone so if for no other reason then if someone else reads this I warn DO NOT get that shit anywhere near your computer just a small drop on your motherboard has the potential to fry your board. But acetone is harmless to your stainless steal and copper heatsink just make sure that all the acetone has COMPLETELY dried before reinstalling the heatsink, even the fumes from acetone can destroy.

Nail polish remover has other compounds in the liquid that may adhere to the surface and affect the next application of thermal paste. Note that there are many different compounds being sold as nail polish remover. Just this week I found that in one specific, non-computer application, WD-40 (a lubricant) cleaned gunk off a windscreen better than the brand of nail polilsh remover we have at home. :) (Of course, I then had to use a cleaner to remove the WD-40 from the windscreen.)

It is recommended that you use either a cleaner specifically designated as such (Arctic Silver sells one) or an alcohol (isopropyl alcohol?).

Edit: And, as the post above mine points out, some nail polish removers contains acetone and you don't want that near your motherboard!
