How much RAM can I allocate to Minecraft if I have 16GB?

My new PC has 16GB of ram, and I plan to do in Minecraft what I have totally always wanted to do, which is to max out this game using mods.

I will be using extreme GLSL shaders, and Optifine, as well as NVidia SuperSample AA 4X

I'm going to crank everything to the right:
Detail levels
Draw Distance
Chunk Updates
Smooth Lighting
Particles

Everything goes to the right!

how much RAM would you guess I should allocate, for the best possible FPS?

PC spec:
Windows 8.1 update 1
GTX 970 4GB (EVGA Superclocked)
intel i5 4690k
16GB ram

Even 4gb should be enough. Minecraft uses cpu and ram a lot. So, even if you allocated 12gb it wouldn't be faster than 6gb allocated. So maybe 4 or 6 gb?

Java games will use whatever you give them, I wouldnt pass 6GB.
4-6 is a bit overkill, however with some modpacks the game will simply crash if given to much ram.

judging from the grammar of your post, I think you meant to say the game crashes if it is not given enough ram, with certain modpacks......

No, if given too much ram (in this case over 4.5 with World Of Mianite) the game locks up.
Not all packs do that, but some will.

With that light of a load, you wont have to worry about going overboard with the ram.
Its usually once you pass the 80-100 mod mark.

I am no expert on this, but I believe when the ram is running out, your processor and GPU must work harder. And, the higher the resolution, the more memory is needed.

4X SSAA at 1080P wasn't even possible on my old computer. I was using 2X and got 25 to 40 FPS

I had 4GB ram, Phenom II x4 925, gtx 750 ti

ALSO most importantly, my draw distance and chunk updates were turned DOWN. These two things fucked my performance the most, and when I turned them up, I got Minecraft to crash fairly easily and it said "Minecraft has run out of memory!"
