UPSs on Two Wire 120VAC Electrical?

I am trying to spare you the long story. Will it hurt a UPS to plug into two-prong power?

Also, will it hurt compact fluorescents (CFLs) to plug into two-prong power?

CFLs will work on two prong as above the ground pin is only there for safety.
The UPS will work on two prong but the surge protection part of the UPS will not work properly as some of the surge is directed to ground.

Well, okay, but they used to install fluorescent lights on two wires. Now there are three wires. So are three wires "truly" necessary? Or is the third wire just a safety ground?

Which prompts my question about the UPS as well....
