High download speed. High latency too.

For the past two weeks I have been having huge issues with my internet. The issue is that I am having a incredibly unstable ping on any game. At first it was bearable with a 0.5 second response delay on DOTA 2 with the occasional massive spike of ping and no connection issues on any other game. But now playing ANY game online has now become impossible.

I was planning to paste in some lines of my ping test to Google via the CMD to show how bad the fluxing was but as of typing this the results showed a ping of 9. I checked the ping I got from my closest set of servers on DOTA 2 and I got 185 at best.

You'll just have to take my word on this, the CMD ping test showed pings that went between 9 - 800 every. single. time.

So, one would think that it's a simple open and shut case of bad internet, but the issue is that my download/upload rates haven't been effected by this issue.

So to sum it up. High Download/Upload. High Latency too.

This is what I have tried.

Restarting router multiple times (duh)
Changing my Ethernet cable.
Reinstalling games.
I've got so desperate I've even tried 'ping killing' software. Doesn't work.

It's been like this for two weeks. I will appreciate any and all potential solutions.

Don't really even need trace route for this, just use ping with -t at the end to do a continuous ping (Ctrl + c to stop ping). Ping to your gateway to see if that is stable. If it isn't reboot, replace wire, and then get new router/modem in that order. Beyond that there is nothing you can really do besides complain to your isp. This isn't uncommon though, I have had this issue with satellite internet before.

When you run your pings to external sources, also run a ping to your router. When you compare the two if the router ping stays mostly stable while the external ping fluctuates then the problem likely isn't isn't your network anyway. Using utilities like trace route can help pinpoint problems but most machines out there block the results you would get so while sometimes it can be useful other times it just gives you a big list of non-responsive machines.

How far are you located from the server you are speaking of? The more distance between you and the server, the higher your ping will be.

Example:
I experience issues with League of Legends sometimes. Server is located in Los Angeles, California. I live in Kansas. Ping is constantly between 70-150 when playing league.

On DOTA 2 I connect to servers in Western Europe. Typically it's servers from Luxembourg. I'm about 40 milles out from London so I'm not too far away from the servers. I should get a ping of 32 to them.

The problem is that you don't connect to them directly, you probably connect to 15 or more different machines that route your traffic between you and them, and any of those points could be causing problems that you can't control.

I understand. But I'm lagging in every other game too. When I play with friends on DOTA one of which who lives not more than 4 miles away from me have no issues to the server. I also (according to my friends) lag often on Team speak, so bad that I become incomprehensible.

Do a ping [IP Address of your gateway] -t. If there is no fluctuation there is nothing you can do. If there is let me know, but you can't control the hops you take to get to a server.

I pinged my gateway and it was solid. So I'm assuming its the ISP. Thanks for your help, I need to have some words now.

Yep! But unfortunately lots of us have been through that and know how this struggle is. I wish you the best in that venture!
