so i have a macbook air from 2012 and when i try to update the software there is an error. I'm using os x lion 10.7.4 right now and i need the update to play civilization v,

Solution
That won't update the OS X version, it will just get the latest patches for your current version. But I still don't understand why it is giving you non-English error messages. I don't believe that Apple are producing any further patches for Lion (10.7).

You can buy Mountain Lion (10.8) from Apple: http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D6377ZM/A/os-x-mountain-lion

Mavericks (10.9) is no longer available (unless you have downloaded it in the past) but Yosemite (10.10) is a free upgrade from the App Store.

I'm trying to update it to somewhere above 10.8.5, thats what needed for civ v. i don't know the exact error message because it isn't in english but every time the exact same error message shows up when it has downloaded 3mb of the update. it says something like, the update can't be checked, the update is possibly damaged.

An update to Yosemite shouldn't affect any existing data. However, there is always a degree of risk in any upgrade. You should ensure that you have refreshed the backups (that you, of course, keep) of any important data.

There are a fair number of differences as your current OS is quite old. A comprehensive review of Yosemite can be found here: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/10/os-x-10-10/
