Hey mate,

I recently had this problem too. For ages my comp would drop out, usually in games like the UFO series and Jagged Alliance BiA. So annoying and weird because I can run most AAA games on full no worries. Anyway i've got a Radeon HD7700. I eventually fixed it. But there are about 50 things it could be. Here are some things I tried.

- Update drivers
- Roll back drivers (sometimes new drivers cause the problem. make sure to fully wash the newer drivers out or you'll get more problems.)
- Turn off "Windows Aero". In personalize turning the theme to "Classic" should do it
- Make sure your comps power is in "High Performance" in control panel
- AMD has the Catalyst Control Center for GPU performance changes. Not sure what Nvidia...

Not sure what Nvidia has. Make sure GPU fans are bumped up
- Look for a tutorial to change the GPU timeout delay in Regedit (the comp resets the driver if the card hangs. this tells it to wait longer before doing it.)
- Pull RAM sticks separately. Apparently a faulty stick can cause it sometimes.

I tried a few other things but cant think of them now. What eventually worked was turning the high performance memory clock and GPU clock setting down from 1250MHz to 1000MHz. The 1250 setting was the default in the Catalyst Control Center. Not sure why this was the problem. It hasn't affected the game quality but I guess they were trying to pull more than the card could handle. Anyway, hope your solutions here. I feel you pain.
