I burn a few films and my own captured video to DVD for friends and family and the odd photo touch up in photoshop/gimp, I am thinking of upgrading my antiquated Dell XPS 420 with it's quad core Intel Q6600 2.4gh multithreading processor and 4gb of DDR2 6400 ram. It also has a HD 3800 Graphics card. (Said it was old)

My question is, if i upgrade to a new system using a i5 4690k will i miss the hyperthreading or will it simply blow my socks off and do everything much much quicker?

I had been considering the i7 4790k but i am trying to keep my budget down in the £600 - £800 price range and still be able to have a go at overclocking.

New setup will probably include: Asus Z97A mobo, Asus GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card,
Arctic Cooling UCACO-P0900-CSB01 Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler and Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory. Plus whichever processor i need.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.

I did not say it wasn't multithreaded, but that it does not have hyperthreading.

Hyperthreading is different than...

4790k is very fast and multithreded. It will multitask better. But yes i5 4690k will blow your socks off and make everything quicker coming from your old setup IT IS A GOOD UPGRADE. AN SSD will speed up OS and load times as well. 256gb would be a good addition to make a snappier setup.. I5 4690k is no slouch......

Technically, since the Q6600 is only a 1st Generation Core 2 Quad, it does not have hyperthreading. So you really won't miss it by going to the I5 4690. As corndog1836 stated, the 4690 is DEFINITELY no slouch and is a NICE upgrade from your current setup.

And I also support the suggestion of adding an SSD drive to your system. With the newer processors and video cards, the biggest bottleneck of a system is the hard drive, and adding an SSD drive will alleviate that issue with its fantastic speed.

According to every report i have read on the Q6600 it is multithreaded, why do you say it isn't?

I did not say it wasn't multithreaded, but that it does not have hyperthreading.

Hyperthreading is different than multithreading. Hyperthreading is a hardware issue. Multithreading is a software issue.

Here are the specs from Intel for the Q6600.....it shows that the Q6600 does not have hyperthreading.

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600
