I have been trying to help my uncle who has been using a direct ethernet connection from his modem to his Macbook. This setup has worked fine, but he recently purchased a new TV with internet capabilities and asked me to help him set things up so that he would have internet on both the Mac and the TV. We purchased a Dynex ethernet switch, the same model that I use on one of my setups that works just fine. However, when everything is connected correctly it seems that the modem will only produce one working dynamic, public ip address. When first connected the Mac still had a connection but the TV would not connect.
It turns out that the TV was receiving a private 169.x.x.x ip address. I don't know why or how. I manually changed the ip, subnet, dynamic ip, and dns numbers on the TV to the ones that the Mac was using. When I did this the TV connected to the internet but the Mac began pulling the private ip again and not connecting anymore. I reset the modem and switch multiple times. So for whatever reason it seems the modem will only give me a single working ip address, regardless of resets.
I would have called the ISP but their tech support is closed until morning, so I thought I would post here and see if one of you brilliant people couldn't solve my problem before I have to call them.
