Computer freezes periodically, and occasionally gives me a BSOD

Okay, so... this is a bit of a story time, and I might have my computer freeze on me while I write this so hopefully there's something on these forums that saves what I write here (You could probably skip a couple paragraphs if you want, I'm just putting the whole story here in case this info turns out to be important). It all started with this ViewSonic VX2858sml monitor I got a while back. It was on sale and I was looking to replace my old monitor anyway, and I really didn't look into it, which was a mistake. So, I got this monitor, and despite it's glaring flaws, I'm still working with it until I start seeing small glitches on the screen every now and then. Little lines of pixelated noise in places on the screen. It was this, and the fact that I couldn't plug an HDMI cable into the back without getting these weird waves going down the screen like it's a really old TV set that made me decide to get a new monitor.

So I did some research and snagged me a decent Acer H276HL, and I thought my troubles might've been over. Nope. In fact they came back in full force, and my computer started freezing with graphical glitches. I remember once, the screen was just completely grey, another time it was grey and white pinstripes, and sometimes a bunch of colorful jaggy lines on top of whatever was on the screen at the time. This was around the time of the first BSOD, I think. (seen here: http://i.imgur.com/F02B2ko.jpg )

For a while, the PC wouldn't even get past the "welcome" chime when Windows 7 starts up, it would just glitch up with jaggy lines and freeze after the first few notes, and whenever the Safe Mode selection screen popped up, the keyboard wouldn't respond, even though it seemed to be getting power. So, putting my detective hat, I thought that it might be a graphical issue, and decided to switch out the current graphics card for an older one I had. Seemed to work fine, so I grabbed a spare Radeon HD 7870 I had (I tried to do SLI once upon a time, but it didn't work out) and slapped it in.

Now it lets me fairly consistently log into Windows, but it also still crashes quite a bit, sometimes after an hour, sometimes after running all day, but it usually crashes before the day's over. Keyboard still sometimes doesn't work when I get to the Safe Mode selection screen. Since then I've gotten two more BSOD's, one yesterday ( http://i.imgur.com/nGQzCRV.jpg ) and one today ( http://i.imgur.com/ab3qJUY.jpg ). Almost all crashes have been happening under minimal CPU and GPU load, just minor web browsing and maybe some video watching. All of the critical errors in the event viewer so far have looked like this ( http://i.imgur.com/an5zToV.png ) which, from what I've been able to surmise, is my computer's way of telling me "What do you mean I froze up? You're the one who pressed the restart button, dummy!"

What I have tried so far:

  • ■ Turning it off and on again.
    ■ Opening the PC case and reseating everything.
    ■ Replacing the Graphics Card
    ■ System Restore.

Wait, which should I run, Memtest86 or Memtest86+? Or does it matter?

Also, I bought this PC from Cyberpower in 2011. Even if I still had the receipts or the paperwork that came with it, I highly doubt the mobo would still be under warantee.

Memtest86 froze... I'm not entirely sure how, but it did. The timer stopped, the progress bars stopped, that little spinning thing made out of dashes and back/forward slashes stopped, everything. The only thing that was still moving was that blinking underscore, but that's it. It got about 1hr 46mins in and detected no errors.

I have no idea what that means, but it can't be anything good. I restarted the test and I'm hoping to get through the whole thing this time.

UPDATE: 2 hrs and 30 mins into the second try and about 28 errors detected, I hope this is a good sign.

Okay, so... after the third time Memtest86 froze I decided to go into BIOS and try to make the changes Tradesman1 suggested and... I feel about 5000% dumber now. I can't find what he's talking about, and I'm not saying I can't find the right menu, I found the area where you change DRAM and CPU/NB voltage settings, but the drop down menus didn't have the options listed. I didn't have the option to select "1333 9-9-9-24 1.6" or "1.35" in any of the menus no matter how hard I searched. I guess I could selected numbers that were closest, but I didn't want to make a mistake and fry something.

Any advice?

Well, I managed to find the CPU/NB voltage, but it was already set to 1.35 this whole time without me needing to set it manually: http://i.imgur.com/1nQ70N5.jpg As for the other one, though, I don't know which DRAM setting I'm supposed to try to set, because there's more than one.

I think I may just try to take a couple of the RAM sticks out, or even try to put the old ones back in.

UPDATE: Interesting development, I went to take two of the RAM sticks out and start it up, and I noticed when I checked up on my RAM that Windows said I only had 8GB of ram, when I had left 16GB in there (2 8GB sticks). I checked the BIOS and it said 8GB too, so I switched out the sticks thinking I might've gotten a faulty stick, but when I did it still read 8GB in BIOS. So I switched the RAM sticks from slots A1/A2 to B1/B2 and it's reading all 16GB now.

I've started the Memtest86 again in hopes that it doesn't freeze again, but perhaps this is a clue to the real problem? I haven't checked to see if not having a memory stick in that slot has stopped the freezing and BSOD problem, so I have no idea if this fixed it or not yet.

Update 2: Okay, so... I got through the Memtest86 with no errors this time. Not sure what to make of it, but I've kept the PC on for a while and it seems to be stable, no crashes yet (fingers crossed). It still does that screen flicker thing during the windows chime when it starts up but other than that I haven't really noticed anything off. Hopefully it stays that way. I'll update again if something breaks.
