I disabled 'enhance intel speed step technology' and now my CPU runs only at 1.6 GHZ even under load. Max temperature reached while running prime95 was 50 degree celsius on stock cooler.
Games are running smooth as always:
Metro 2033 - no performance drop on max settings (using DSR instead of MSAA)
GTA 5 - nearly maxed (DSR instead of MSAA, shadows set to high instead of very high)
Witcher 3 - Maxed without hairworks
Project cars - All maxed.
I can safely conclude that games are much more GPU dependent rather than CPU. It is quite surprising to know that i7 2600k, performing at half the stock clocks only costs 3 to 4 FPS.
Only cons was slow loading times.
What say?

I don't see him saying anything about Windows 10 or DirectX 12...

Most games do not pound on the CPU too hard. But some do. With that CPU running at 1.6Ghz, the day you load up a game that pounds the CPU nice and hard, you will know all about it. LOL

Yup. Another trick is to turn off hyperthreading.

You don't need to disable Intel Speed Step to accomplish what you did. In Windows' power options

  • ■ Click "change plan settings" for a power plan (or create a new one)
    ■ Click on "Change advanced power settings."
    ■ Scroll down and click the + next to "Processor power management"
    ■ Click the + next to "Maximum processor state"
    ■ Lower the value from 100%. 99% is good for disabling turbo boost. 5% will accomplish pretty much the same thing as disabling Speed Step.
The advantage of doing it this way is that if you should need the full performance of the CPU, you can get it simply by changing the current power plan. That's a lot easier than rebooting so you can change BIOS settings.

Never used hyperthreading since the day I bought the CPU.
