Fresh OS Install on New SSD

I have just bought a new laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad E550). It came with an HDD, so I also bought an SSD (Samsung Evo 850, 500GB). I unscrewed the back and took out the old HDD and put in the new SSD, then put it all back together again.

I have Windows 7 on disc and usb. When I turn on the computer it goes to the boot menu. When I select any of the options the screen goes black for a second or two and then goes back to the boot menu again.

What have I done wrong and why won't it boot? I don't have the wires to connect both the HDD and SSD to the computer at the same time, so I can't clone the files from the HDD.

You have not yet installed the OS Yet. Right?

Correct. I'm trying to install the OS on the new SSD, but it won't start. I can't get past the boot screen. I have the Windows CD in the computer and try to boot from the CD, but the boot screen just keeps reappearing. Same with installing from USB.

Hm. Check in the bios if the primary boot device is changed to the DVD ROM or the External Storage. If not, make sure it is changed and save and exit the Bios setup.

Then try booting the Windows Boot media.

I gave it a try, but that just changed the order on the boot menu. It's like the computer doesn't recognise there's a bootable disc in the disc tray, so it tries to boot from the disc when I tell it to but then fails and goes back to the boot menu (I'm assuming this is what's happening, but I can't be sure as there is no error menu). I know there's nothing wrong with the disc though, because I tried booting on another computer using it and it worked fine.

Check if the Disk Drive is working properly. Or try a USB bootable image.

You made the USB Image using any software like RUFUS or what was the procedure you followed to make the USB bootable?

Yes, I used RUFUS (2.2.668). I kept all the settings as default except I changed the drop down next to 'create a bootable disk using' from 'FreeDOS' to 'ISO Image'. Then I selected the .iso file and pressed start.

Okay. Try reboot and keep on tapping on the F12 button. This will throw up a list of primary boot devices. Select USB HDD. Then enter and try if windows installer is loading.
