Hi, I have the current system for about 3 years and a few days back, the graphics is giving me problems during game play ( distortion and eventually hangs). I hard reset and the problem comes back ( that is distortion and hangs after a while). Eventually, during one hard reset, I was not able to enter windows.

Was able to enter safe mode, but for some reason, my restore points were gone. ( Perhaps removed by ccleaner?)

I have then reinstalled windows 7 and was able to enter in "normal windows ". Since then, my graphics card is being detected as "Standard VGA Adapter" . The monitor shows have some columns of lines that appears depending on what is the background color. This column width changes with the screen resolution size changes.

When I install the GPU driver from either from CD or the web, the device manager shows the GPU driver replacing the "Standard VGA Adapter".

However, upon restart of PC and after windows splash screen, the screen becomes black or occasionally blue screen with lines instead. No mouse cursor seen in both case

Both graphics card fans are working and dust cleared. I have tried updating the BIOS with no difference seen.

PC Specs are:
GPU: Sapphire HD7850 2GB GDDR5 OC Edition
Motherboard: Z77-D3H Gigabyte
Processor : Core i7-3770 CPU @3.40 Ghz 3.90 GHz
RAM: 16.0 GB
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS
Power Supply: Cooler Master GX 650W
SSD for Windows : OCZ Vertex 3 120GB
HDD: HSSEA-ST2000DM001-1 ( Seagate 2 TB)

Is my graphics card faulty or software problem? Its puzzling that it sort of works when the driver is Standard VGA Graphics Adapter but does not work when GPU drivers are installed.

I would guess if its acting up or failing right there I would feel its safe to say the card went bad

if ti was looking fine and then acted up after you installed the amd driver then you could move on to more troubleshooting ?? [opinion]

install the card in another computer and check if it has the issue there as well

I have a 7850 in my son's computer. It's been a solid card. My son's computer did the exact same thing a couple of months ago. It would work up until the drivers were installed. The card just died one day.
I was able to resurrect mine by baking it. Google it. It seems odd to bake a video card, but it has been working fine for over a month. I can't guarantee that it will fix it, but if it's dead, you can't really make it worse.

Thanks for the replies . But no permission to use the oven from my wife that could potentially have toxic fumes in it :( . But good to know that more likely than not, the Graphics card is the issue and not other hardware. Of course best way is to test it is on another PC . Just need to find a friend's PC. Thanks guys.

Hi, I had tried using the CD driver that came with the card and also tried getting the latest drive from sapphire but both have failed. I also just tried 13.12 that is recommended which also resulted in blue screen with vertical light blue lines after the windows logon . I did a system restore to get back.

Also, found another problem. I found my system restore points are all lost again as I checked it this time before before installing the 13.12 driver. Now have increased the space for restore points to 12 GB since it is stated to be currently using 3.99 GB for 3 restore points. It sounds like a lot of space being used. Hopefully, there's nothing wrong with the SSD or software problem causing this loss of restore points as well.
