Computer won't start after a power outage - Mobo or PSU Problem?

Hey Guys,

I have a fairly old computer (4 years). For the past year or so, whenever I switch off the main switch (after shutting down the computer) or if there is a power outage; the computer wouldn't start. If this happens I have wait for a few hours, remove main PSU cable from the mobo, plug it back in and then the computer would start again.

Day before there was a power outage in my area, and now the computer just wouldn't start. I tried waiting, plugging in the psu cable back, removing the ram, even cleaning the computer with a blower. Nothing seems to work this time. I can see the green led light on on the mother board.

I am not really sure what is the issue here, is it the motherboard or is it the psu? Is there anyway I could turn on the computer now?

I would really appreciate any help here.

I'll have to buy a new PSU for that. Should I go ahead and conclude that it's a PSU problem and buy a new one? Any suggestions for a new one?

Any suggestions on a good PSU? Yup I have already thought about buying a UPS, lately the power outages have been more frequent.

Hey buddy I just tried it and the PSU fan did spin even the power button light (blue) went on... when I I tried to plug the cable in to the motherboard.... nothing happens at all... should I conclude that it's the motherboard?

yah then your motherboard got fried because of the outage. it's happened to my friend too. where they had a outage in the area and the motherboard got fried. So get your motherboard RMA'ed and let them know what happened when you are getting it RMAed

Hey Vahe,

I am actually thinking of building a new computer altogether instead of replacing just the motherboard. What do you think of this idea?

My budget for the new computer is around 25,000 - 30,000 INR (400 - 500 USD)

Do you have any suggestions for me? Here are the specs that I have in mind

Intel i5 4440 - 13,000 INR ($200)
Asus B85M G - 6,500 INR ($100)
Kingston HyperX Fury/Corsair XMS3/GSkill RipjawsX 1 x 4gb - 2,500 INR ($40)
Antec VP550p - 3,800 INR ($60)
Cooler Master Elite 311 - 2,500 INR ($40)

What do you think of this combination? I might add a graphics card few months down, also thinking about getting a 128 GB SSD for installing the OS in a few months.

Please let me know your thoughts, and if you have any better suggestions for me.

sorry for the late response ZeroSLeep i'v been a bit busy these few day's.

here is the motherboard i would pick
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157510

CPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117302

RAM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231427

these are the power supplys i would choose from.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G28N5255
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

And the case is fine. but try to find a case with fans on it. IDK if you can find it in the websites you are looking from. maybe they will be more expensive there IDK. But if you can give me the websites you want to buy from I will take a look at the websites and pick out the best options for $500

Appreciate it bro... Actually in India the prices are a bit high and the specs/components you suggested would go over budget. Here is the website I am planning to buy from - http://www.flipkart.com/

Thanks! You are the best :)

What's the difference between this board and the Asus B85M G ?

What do think about the rest of the specs RAM, PSU and the Case?

For starters the chip set's are different. Asus is Intel B85 and Gigabyte is Intel H97 and the H97 is a lot better

Asus has only 1 3.0 PCI slot. and the Gigabyte has 1 pci 3.0 and 1 pci 2.0. So you will be able to SLI if you would like in the future.

Asus has 1 CPU fan header and 2 extra fan headers. Gigabyte has 1 cpu and 3 extra fan. Good thing on both of these motherboard they are both 4 pins for all the headers. 4 pins means you can control the fan speed. 3 pin means you cannot control

Me personally just because of the chip set i would pick H97 over B85. but it's all up to you

Awesome... thanks... so that was the best mobo I could buy in India for the price right? Would my old HDDs be compatible with this board?

What about RAM, Case and PSU? I am worried about the PSu... I think i'll need a good PSU

Ram you can get up to 1600 speed of ram. No more then 1600. Case is fine Mid tower case is fine. But if i where you i would suggest you to find a case with more fans. Tipically 1 fan in the back 1 fan on the top of the case and 1 fan at the door of the case and you can find cases with fans in the front of the case too. the more fans the better.

yes the Hard drive will work with SATA 6Gb/s.

What Graphics card are you planning on getting?

Any brand you recommend for RAMs? I am thinking Corsair... love their products. I won't be buying a Graphics Card for now since I recently bought a work laptop which cost me $1k but I will be buying one in a few months, I am not big on gaming now (used to play a lot in my early days) mostly games like NFS, Blur or any racing games or somethings Crysis. Any suggestions for a Graphics card to go with the config you suggested above?

Also, my plan is to get a 128 GB SSD in a few months and install OS on it... what do you think?

the ram is good. doesn't really matter all brands are basically the same.

for a graphics card i would suggest you to get this. it's the best bang for the buck.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202050 best Stream Processors/boost clock and Memory Interface 256-Bit witch is really good. All Nvida cards at this price only have a 128 Bit. And yes you can use a AMD graphics card on a intel board. the only thing you have to look at the board when you buy it is If it supports Crossfire if you decide to do that in the future. but 1 card will work on every board.

And for power supply i would suggest you getting a 600W power supply. even if you can get away with the 550W get a 600W just to not put stress on your power supply, it will last longer that way and its just better for the PC to give it all the juice it needs instead of exactly what it requires.

about the SSD. yah you can do that. have a hard drive and a SSD and install OS on SSD and a few other things. Just make sure after installing the SSD that you go and change from bios so the computer boots up from the SSD and not the hard drive
