Have a machine used for development, but want to play some games as well

I have a machine set up for application development, it came with a Quadro 600 graphics card, which seems quite crappy for running any sort of games. I tried to load up Dreamfall Chapters, and it was unplayable. Since I've had consoles for quite some time now, I haven't actually done any PC gaming any time recently, but really want to play Dreamfall, and the occasional other game on my desktop.

Presently, here is my configuration:

  • ■ Two monitors, 2560 x 1600 each
    ■ Dual E52687W processors (Xeon 3.1ghz, 8 cores each)
    ■ SSD boot drive
    ■ 128 gig memory (Made up of 8gb sticks, 1600, 2RX4, 240)
    ■ Slots

    • ■ Four PCIe x16 Gen 3
      ■ One PCIe x16 Gen 3 wired x4
      ■ One PCIe x16 Gen 2 wired x4
      ■One PCI 32bit/33MHz

My only requirement is that I can reasonably play current games. It needs to be able to drive both monitors for my development work, but I assume games still really are only going to use one of the monitors for *gaming*.

My gaming habits being primarily console based, I can justify $500 or less in general. I don't want to spend $1000 on something that will see relatively few gaming hours versus development hours.

Very important to me is for it to run relatively cool. My desktop is pretty quiet, and I've had bad experiences with graphics cards that ran hot in the past, requiring lots of cooling, and being noisy, and prone to failure. If I could get a graphics card with good performance and no fan, I'd consider it, but I'm fine with one that has a fan, but isn't pushed so far it has to scream, especially since I do mostly 2d coding work.

Suggestions are appreciated!

the 970 is a great card, and runs pretty cool. for the full $500 you might be able to get a 980, but I do no see that as worthwhile. you could stretch the budget and get a 295X2 and will lots of respect also. (some are $530 after rebate $550 no rebate sometimes)
