Hello,

My computer came with a built in (i think) Ralink 802.11N wireless LAN card, and it has been absolutely terrible in my new home. I work from home, so I need my internet connection to be flawless, so I went ahead and uninstalled the Ralink, by following directions I found on some instructional forum. I then went to Target and bought a Linksys AE6000 to pair up with my Linksys router. I went home and installed the device without a problem, and instantly my problems seemed to be fixed. Full bars, and after a speed test it was thru the roof good, compared to the Ralink. I was in heaven for all of about 20 minutes. I went to download an update for a video game that I play via STEAM, and it just wouldn't allow me to do it. After an hour or so of trying different things, I came to the point where I wanted to just uninstall steam, and reinstall, hoping it would work. So I uninstalled STEAM, and when I try to reinstall it, it seems fine, until I get to the updating the STEAM network phase. It's a 110k KB download, and when it gets to 30k it starts going backwards. After I read some stuff online about the issue, I looked up my STEAM logs, and noticed where it was saying things wernt working out. Below this long winded story are those logs.
So I decided to just restart my computer for the hell of it. When It turned back on, the Ralink wireless card re-downloaded itself, all by itself, without an option for me to cancel the download, and now im just stuck at this point. I'm not very versed in this field, so I'm just lost as what to do now. Nothing seems to completely get the Ralink device off of my computer, and my only thought to what would be causing these download issues would be that the two devices are interfering with each other. I'm currently linked to the Linksys card, because its my only way of getting internet service, as the Ralink doesnt even remotely carry a useable signal.

Sorry for the overly long read, I will highly appreciate any advice given.

Thanks -- Adam

Hi

you said 'Ralink 802.11N wireless LAN card' which implies it is a card in a slot (pci or pci-e)

On some motherboards the chips are on the motherboard.

Some details of make & model of PC would give a clue

as would a picture of the back of the PC where the aerial is located
usually wireless cards have 1 to 3 aerials attached so you would recognise it

As I said previously
no need to uninstall device driver software

go to Device Manager & disable Ralink wireless networking device
right click on device & you will see option to disable it

for pictures of Ralink wireless devices

available as usb dongle or pci card or pci-e card

802.11N is...
Hi

Did you uninstall the ralink driver ?
or disable the device in device manager?

If you un installed the driver Windows will re load it at next Windows startup

Might be best to open the case and remove the wireless card you do not want to use if you can not disable the device to stop the driver re loading
(disconnect mains power cable first & take anti static precautions)

I see the new wireless device is USB
sometimes they work better on a short extension cable (0.5m to 1 m) so the device is not shielded by the metal PC case

Some wireless cards (PCI or PCI-e) have one aerial others 2 or 3 and are usually better than USB devices
(Usually the more aerials the better)

It is possible to have 2 ethernet connections in one PC (using network cables)
but probably not a good idea to have 2 wireless devices

Hi, Mike, thanks for your input. After experimenting with disconnect the Linksys device, I found that the internet although horrible, did work as intended. This to me at least, is an obvious confirmation of the two devices conflicting with each other although one device was removed from my system. When removing the Ralink, I first disabled it, then went to device manager, and uninstalled it thru that. I then attempted to go into the uninstall registry and processed to find the name on the list, but there wasn't any name indicating the Ralink, nor is there now that its re-installed itself again. I've tried to look online to see what the card would actually look like so I could attempt to physically remove it, but the pictures that im getting of it thru google, show a USB device, and since I cant locate a foreign USB device on my PC, I assume its built into the mother board, some how? As you can tell, I'm not too incredibly computer savvy.

802.11N is the wireless networking standard not model number for card
also Ralink make the chips & sell them to other companies who use them to make retail products
