For sentimental reasons mostly I want to upgrade and continue to use my XPS 720 if possible. It currently has a Dell manufactured BTX board in it. It is a mid-2007 rig. Currently at Core 2 Duo 3 Ghz.
I got on a chat line with a Dell sales individual who indicated that they have a motherboard they use out of their internal support department that can accommodate 16 GB of RAM and comes with an i5 processor (was told via chat it was a Intel® Core™ i5-3570K. The burner on this one is they did not have it in stock! I think they were trying to tell me it was the same part number?
Obviously you can tell I REALLY like my XPS 720. And I would have liked to upgrade the motherboard. My question to the group is does this sound legitimate? If so, wonder if I can get it somewhere else? I've googled for it and looked at Amazon and eBay. No luck so far.
Brad
Thanks.

Hey folks.

Unolocogringo-The current board information is below in case it helps. I'm trying to see if there's an upgrade for the motherboard. I'm not trying to put a new processor in. I'm looking to put in a different board. Dell apparently has a board with the same model number but it has an i5 in it and a 16 GB RAM maximum?
I wanted to see if you all thought that sounded right.
Board: Dell Inc. 0YU822 A00
Serial Number: ..CN137407AI01HX.
Bus Clock: 1333 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Inc. A06 04/01/200

Vahe Bro A-
The RAM is DDR2. It is actually DDR2 PC2-6400 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.8V 256Meg x 64

The PC you sent in the link looks exactly from the outside like what I have. But the processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo and I believe the model is 6850.
It is not an Intel Extreme like the one you sent.

Why was I thinking that I had to go with a Dell proprietary BTX motherboard? All the Google related stuff I've found so far talks about how the power supply from Dell will blow everything up, and the fittings would not fit unless I went with a Dell proprietary motherboard?

So, all these motherboards will fit in this case? No retro fitting needed or anything like that?

I printed out pictures of the present motherboard and the ones you sent. I don't see how they will fit in the case? No matter how I arrange the pictures, it doesn't seem to add up to something that will work. Looks to me like the ports and PCIs memory and all flipped over compared to what I presently have?

I did a little searching around and everything I could find for motherboards in the BTX form factor is socket 775.
Which is the same as you have.
It appears that if you wish to keep the BTX form factor case you have the best you can do is upgrade you current processor to a quad core from the link in my above post.
None of the retail board manufacturers released BTX form factor boards into the retail supply chain except Intel with a socket 775 965 chipset board.
But it will take the same processors as your current board, so it is not really an upgrade.
You only option at this point is to see if you can get a part number for the Dell board you were told about by dell as we can probably find one from the OEM supply houses. My searches from them did not find anything but socket 775 in BTX form factor.
