Using a HDD with an OEM copy of Win7 on a new computer

Ok, so my friend is building a new computer from scratch on a really tight budget, so to alleviate costs a little I'm giving him an old HDD that was in a pre-built PC. It has windows 7 home premium, but it is an OEM version.

I've heard that you cannot re-install windows with it, and as it is going into a completely new system, a full re-install will almost certainly be necessary. I have the product key for it, but no recovery disc/ system image backup disc....

I've heard that it may be possible to activate through "phone activation", but I really need exactly what I may have to do to get this HDD working with the new system. Thanks for any and all help!

You have to call Microsoft and they could deactivate it from the old motherboard, and guide you through the steps to reactivate it on the new motherboard. There are no guarantees they would help you on this, but you should call them first.

Yeah, unfortunately I'm pretty sure it wasn't like a system builder version =/ computer is very old though, and I don't even live in the place where I bought it anymore =( Thanks for reply though!

No problem, but as listed above: If Microsoft cannot help you transfer it to another motherboard, you may have to buy a new copy of Windows.

Best of luck.
