PC won't recognise my graphics card

So I just recently bought a GTX980ti, the installation went fairly well and the card seemed to be running fine. However, Windows seemed to be running slower than usual, and for some unknown reason I was not able to access the Nvidia Control panel. I'm using the HDMI port on the card right now, so one would think that it would be functional. But I'm unable to download new drivers and I can't find any information that shows that the card is connected to my motherboard in any way.
Also, I almost forgot to add, I've got a 850W power supply, an i7-4790k processor and a MSI Gaming 7 motherboard with 16GB of memory.

Yeah, sorry about that :p I've added a few of the specs, but I'm also running on windows 8.1, got a 2TB HDD and a 256GB Samsung EVO SSD

I swear I already added it, but it's an 850W Corsair RM850 PSU, an MSI Gaming 7 MB and a i7-4790k CPU

By you are unable to download any drivers do you mean you went under device manager and did the automatic search or did you go to the website of the maker of you graphics card and manually try and download the drivers? If you did not manually look for the drivers and download them off the website this will fix your problem. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
This is the link for the reference 980 ti drive. if you do not have the reference card please post the exact one you have

I tried downloading them through through the website at first, but for some reason java doesn't work, and that stopped my progress, I tried updating through Geforce Experience as well, but that failed about halfway through for some unknown reason. Just now I tried to install the drivers that came with the card, but these were outdated. But thanks for that link, I'll download them and see if it works

Try uninstalling java and then download the driver. If it doesn't let you download the driver without java re-download the lastest version of java after uninstalling it.

I haven't tried completely uninstalling it and then re-installing it, but I did download it. But it didn't seem to work at all

I tried, but it failed to download it. I've got a feeling there's a problem with my SSD, but I'm not sure. I might try to put my old GPU back in to see if that fixes any of the issues

Your SSD should be fine if you are still up and running but if it was not fine go into BIOS and you can check if it is detecting the SSD. At the same time of doing that check and see if the BIOS recognizes your 980 ti and is enabled.

I'm guessing that's the problem then, because I've been into the BIOS a couple of times now, and it does not detect the 980ti. But I don't understand how that can be the case when I've got my monitor plugged up to it via HDMI, and it works perfectly fine

I was quite uncertain about how to do this when I did it. But I was pretty sure it required that you plug in both the 6-pin and 8-pin connectors? If so I don't see how I could have done that wrong, they're both properly connected.

That is correct you need the 6 pin and 8 pin plugged in on both the power supply and GPU. So you have this step right. The next thing you can do is try starting your computer in safe mode and see if it detects the graphics card this way.

I might try that tomorrow, for now I have just reconnected my old GPU, and as I suspected, everything is back to working optimally. I'll do a bit more research before I try to install it again :p Thanks a lot for your help!
