Hi guys,

First time here in tom's hardware :)

I am encountering some weird problems with my desktop. Been looking for the solution online but couldn't really find a similar problem that I am facing at the moment.

In a sentence, my main problem is that my 2 out of 4 R9 290X GPUs that are connected to the secondary PSU are not detected by the system.

So, before using 4 GPUs, I used 2x R9 290X without any problem at all. So long story short, I want to install another 2 cards, R9 290X, by using dual PSU configuration with the help of ADD2PSU-D device. The two PSU are Silverstone 1200W Gold and Thermaltake 850W Gold. A single silverstone won't be able to handle the 4 GPUs as each of them will take 300W at full load.

I make TTe as the primary PSU and Silverstone (SS) as secondary PSU. The configuration are:

TTe takes Mobo, CPU, fans, 2x 290X.
SS takes only 2x 290X.

So, firstly, I didn't try to install all 4 GPUs, instead I installed 3 of them with TT took 2 GPUs PCIE16x and 8x while SS takes only 1 PCIE4x as I just wanna check whether the add2psu worked or not. When I had had it installed, the system looked just fine. The SS made the GPU fan spun, the system booted just fine, it successfully reach to desktop, etc. But then when I checked the system in Device Manager, only 2 out of 3 GPUs were detected. So, after bunch of experiments here and there, I found out that whichever GPUs that are connected to secondary PSU (SS) wont get detected by the system. EXCEPT, when SS powered the primary GPU PCIE16x.

Therefore, I tried dual GPU config with PCIE16x powered by SS and 8x powered by TT and BAM! both of them were detected but after I restarted the PC, the monitor didn't get any input from the PCIE16x any longer. So basically I couldnt get any display after that although the system booted just fine if checked via the debug code.

What I questioned myself about is, why would the detection problem exists if what PSU does is only to power up the GPU and that's it? The fact that it powers up the GPU, that means the add2psu device works properly, so I couldn't figure out why this detection problem arise.

And also, why the GPU is detected when I use SS to power up the PCIE16x, but not detected if it powers the 8x 4x for instances.

Any help or input from you regarding this would be very appreciated guys! :)

Thank you so much.
Chris
