Whenever I use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' tool, I also see this mystery entry, with no drive letter.

(Where's my image? The Preview showed it, but after publishing it's not included!
Here's a link instead: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/WhatUSB-1.jpg )

(That had four entries, and I've just removed the USB with drive letter F: The remainig two are external WD hard drives.)

How can I discover what it is please? And why does it have no drive letter?

Hello there, Terry!

Are you sure there are no external devices other than the two WD drives connected at the moment of taking the screenshot?
I'd suggest you to check the drives listed in Disk Management and see if there is anything weird with the partitions or the drive letters there.
Another thing you can try to make this go away is uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers for your computer from Device Manager. Here is a guide that might help you with the procedure: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725782.aspx

Hope it helps. Let me know how it goes! :)

Thanks. There are other 'external devices' (printer, USB hub, Space Naviagor, etc) but, as I said, no 'USB storage'. The issue seems somehow connected with the USB stick. Sometimes, not always, this 'ghost' appears under certain hard-to-define situations. Such as after attempting unsuccessfully to close the USB port.

I'm using a handy tool called USBDeview to pursue further.
