Hello all,

So I am doing a new build and I only have my old upgrade media disk from vista 32 bit, Win 7 32 bit, and I got a free copy of the Win8 32/64 upgrade disk. I want to put Win8 64 bit on my SSD on the new build (which will have a different motherboard) from the HDD of my old build which has Win 7 32 bit. I know you can only do a 32 to 64bit upgrade with a clean install with the disk, but I wanted to ask what is the easiest way of doing this transfer/upgrade/bit change?

Thanks

Solution
Upgrade disks only work is the previous version of Windows is installed and activated, so in this case to upgrade to Windows 8 you need Windows 7 installed, and if you have an upgrade version of Windows 7 you need to install Vista first. You can then do a clean install of Windows 8 64 bit.

There are some hacks around this but I am not familer with them.

You can upgrade to 32bit Win 8 then do a clean install of windows 64bit after that but the transfer of windows to a new machine is what worries me.

I have everything backed up so I don't mind wiping the drive. Is there an easy way to transfer the windows license to a new drive (instead of cloning the whole thing just to wipe it in the future)?

I normally wouldn't care but since windows 10 comes out in a few months I would rather save my money for a full version of that since I am not sure how clean installs of windows 10 will work down the road with the free upgrade and all.
