Do I need a dedicated hard drive to clone my systems 250GB SSD to?

or can I use a 250GB partition created on my 3TB HDD? Then use remaining space on 3TB for another partition or two (to store media).

Solution

Ah, no problem.
In this case, simply create an image, using any of the current cloning applications.
Acronis Trueimage, Easus ToDo, Macrium Reflect, Casper.

All present the option to create an image of that drive, and that image simply goes into a folder on the other drive.

My 250GB SSD is staying.

I'm just looking at backup options, in case system gets corrupted or whatever. It's a new build, with a new copy of 8.1 on my new SSD. People on here have suggested that I clone it every once in a while to back it up.

The application I'm currently using, Casper (not free but very good), gives you the opportunity to create a bootable CD. In case of a drive fail, boot from that CD, point it at the image you recently made, and port that to the new replacement drive.

Just to make sure I understand;

1) I don't need a dedicated partition/HDD. The image created simply goes into a folder on any partition or drive I tell it. Therefore, I could put it on a single 3TB partition with my media files, without accidentally wiping out media files?

2) If I create a bootable CD, I still need to do step 1. In other words the bootable CD will not contain the image created in step 1. I can use a CD/RW or DVD/RW disk for the bootable CD?

3) What is the website for Casper? I did a search and don't now what the legit site is. I don't want to download it from cnet.

I will research the other programs you and johnnyb105 mentioned to see if they create bootable CD's.

1. Yes
2. Yes. The bootable is just to access the system and the image you created earlier. Casper also allow you to create incremental images.
3. Link as above. There is a 30 day trial version, but it is slightly feature limited.
