Whats a better card for using the next 5 years the Nvidia gtx 970 with it being really powerful, or the Amd R9 390 with its 8 Gb of vram?

Solution

I'd personally go with the 970. Reason 1: The 970 is far cheaper, sitting around $350 for one of the best cards and $320-$330 for decent cards. Wereas the 390 is going to anywhere from $550-$750. Reason number two is that you will not need anything more powerful for a 970 most likely. I am currenty using and AMD card, the r9 280 (which is weaker than the 970) and I have been able to max out every game I've played and hold good frame rates. The 970 also requires a lot less power allowing you to spend a little less on the PSU (never get a poor PSU, just go for one of the cheaper ones from seasonic and...

Probably R9 390 with 8GB of vRAM because newer games are becoming so vRAM hungry... Wait for R9 390 release so we can test it and do real benchmark comparisson to GTX 970... But R9 390 should be better in almost every aspect

gtx 970 for 1080p 60 fps gaming. the 8gb vram on the 390 is totally useless due to it's lack of processing power. for 4k both cards are insufficient. also the 970 is around 150 watts while the 390 is around 250. the 970 is dx12.1because ROVS and CR tier 1. The 390 is dx12.0 , however has higher resource binding.

I think the 970 is still overall better than anything amd can offer in the category

I would also point out that the XFX r9 390X only scored like 300 more on firestrike on a youtube video. The same guy uploaded who bought the early-sold xfx390x from bestbuy if i remember right, they even admitted it, and was joking on the early sold card on the E3 AMD conference. so based on this the 390 is probably lesspowerful than a 970.

R9 390 was confirmed $329. R9 3xx series is also very efficient so I don't know where the "Requires a lot less power" argument comes from. It's not Hawaii, it's a completely new GPU

I disagree completely. R9 390 was confirmed to be $329 and it beats the GTX 970 in every aspect besides maybe power usage (Even then, the 390 is far more efficient than the 290). It will be FAR more future proof in the end

You're really gonna believe that guy ? hahah
He can't even do a proper benchmark...

Ok then take a look at his one...

what do you say now ?

Let's just wait till they fix the drivers some more and proper benchmarks come out because you can't believe either one of those TBH.. :) Till then let's not be bias or guess anything

You're basing your entire opinion off of one man (Who clearly seems to be a Nvidia fanboy)'s Youtube review. The 390 is a better card. Even in the video it has better performance. You cannot deny that. The power usage is not high at all when compared to most enthusiast GPUs, it's just that Maxwell is extremely efficient.

actually not. i just linked those as a curiosity. i based my opinion on the parameters i wrote down before. anyway i still think the 970 beats the 390 and actually yes i believe guy a lot more than the video you linked which is actually copy pasted pictures of other videos , lol. and by the way in the video i linked check gpu-z on the screen... exactly the stats of the 390. but we will see the genuine after-release benchmarks anyway in few days.

proofy dude, what you are linking is actually copy pasted graphs anyone can make with Excel. even you or me within 5 minutes. on the other hand i linked probably the original guy who actually really did a firestrike benchmark with the xfx 390x, just watch his video... check out gpu-z and also the unboxing, even the time totally fits between the upload of the 2 videos.
check his voice... it's actually really the same guy.

Y'all need to understanf the 390/x and anything below it is rebrands. Like full rebrands. Only tweaks made was some slight clock improvements, 8 gigs of vram, and dx12 compatible, BUT it is NOT dx12.1 compatible, where 900 series are. If anything, a 390x is now as good as a 970.

nope, the card actually shipped with the new driver. if you watched the guys video you would've seen the driver CD in the box. By the way i don't consider linustechtip a good performance review... They make a few good reviews, but they are not honest most of the times. they usually don't point out issues.

That's why you look at benchmarks from at least 4 sources :)... They had to ship some driver with the video card of course, what I want to say is that it's not perfected, they are still working on it and improving it stability....
