Broken laptop screen - Unable to get external monitor to display bios

So a coworker of mine dropped his Windows 7 Sony Vaio laptop and cracked the screen. It's an older model (2012), but he wants to use it as an emergency/spare system, and plug it into a monitor if needed.

Since it hasn't been reformatted in a while and is running extremely slow, I was going to reload Windows (the Sony recovery partition is still intact). Unfortunately, hitting FN+F7 will not provide any video output while in BIOS or loading windows, only after windows has completely loaded (the desktop shows on the monitor).

I took another harddrive (blank) loaded Windows 7 on it from another computer, and installed it in the laptop. It seems to load to Windows (I hear the windows startup chime), but it won't output any video to an external monitor. If I hit ENTER, it shuts down. If I hit TAB and Enter, there is harddrive activity, but it then stops. The fresh load of Windows 7 will not output to the monitor (I'm guessing it's because it installed drivers for the other computer's video card.

Am I out of options here? I've tried a few outside the box solutions, but it seems that the only way the laptop will display on the external monitor is after Windows is loaded (on it's original harddrive)
