So iv got my laptop and my desktop connected though a router with rj 45s on a homegroup. My laptop has a bunch of games that I need to get to my desktop. My laptop has a 10/100 nic and my desktop is a 10/100/1000. My rounter is a 10/100 i belive (wndr3300). Whats the best way to transfer the files? Iv been right clicking and sharing the folders i need from the laptop and the dragging and dropping them where i need them on the desktop via my computer/network blah blah. Is this the correct way to share files? Also, my transfer speed is 11.1-11.4MBs steady transfer speed. Do all devices need to be gigabit? Like if I go buy a gigabit router with the laptop still limit the speed due to the 10/100? Is 11.4 max at 10/100?

Solution
The slowest link in the chain will be the speed the connection is.

So if everything was a 1GB connection except for the laptop that was a 100MB connection, the entire chain would run at 100MB.

Yeah, your limit is pretty clearly the 100 NIC in the laptop and the router. Yup find the slowest point in the chain, and that is the speed of the chain.

Thats why when the water district is laying 6 foot pipe underground, they do not drop down to 1 foot pipe somewhere and then back up to 6 foot pipe later on. Same principal with data speeds.

Yes I can. Its steam games. If the game was installed via disc without steam then your statement would be correct.

Ok so limited by the slowest device. Got that part. Now about the sharing part. Is the only way to share files/folder by right clicking the file/folder and sharing that way through advanced sharing and/or moving the file/folder to the documents/music/video ect folder. Any other ways or is that the main ones?
