Wifi extender creating a new network, can this be changed?

I've bought the Netgear WN3000RPv2 Wifi Extender and I set it up properly, it created a new network with my normal wireless network but with _EXT in the end. I then tried to see if i could change this in the configuration but I found nothing, even connecting it with a LAN cable does not solve the problem.

  • Computer specifications
    Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Intel Core i7 3930K @ 3.20GHz
    16,0GB DDR3 @ 1600MHz
    RAMPAGE IV EXTREME
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 (MSI)
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 (MSI)
I would like to use the wifi extender so it only connects as one network, instead of having two different networks in my house.
Please note the computer runs on cable and the wireless extender will be mostly used by phones and TV's.

Just by skimming through the manual I don't think you can bridge with that device. There are several other brands that I know can extend. For example the Apple Airport extreme and the airport express can seamlessly and effortlessly (using ethernet) extend the wifi range using the same wifi ssid's doing handshaking between accespoints and clients depending on signal strength.

However netgear support does have the article here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24942/~/how-to-set-up-my-wireless-extender-to-use-the-same-ssid-as-my-router where they say it can be done (so manual says no, support says yes), but they do warn that "...it is possible that the wireless device may stay connected to the main router unless moving...

In windows for example if you go to the device manager under advanced settings you can set the roaming rules to aggressive and best throughput, automating the process but there is no guarantee every device can be configured this way.

Hope this helped.

Thank you very much, I managed to make it work with the link you sent and a little fiddling around with the network.
