Hello. I am considering a very high performance CAD build with 2 cpus. However, for the sake of simplicity, I am also considering a single cpu build. Rather than use two Xeon E5-2620 V3 2.4GHz 6-Cores, I was hoping to use a single different CPU, perhaps a 12 core.

Can someone tell me what single CPU I could use instead to achieve similar performance? Budget is about $800-$1000 if this is possible.

Thanks in advance.

Solution
A 10 core 2.4 GHz or a 8 Core 3.0+ GHz will outperform two E5 2620s in a wide variety of tasks (but not all). There is a loss of performance in a multi socket system due to the need for different CPUs to communicate, which takes time.

A good alternative performance wise to the dual 2.4 Ghz 6 cores would be this:

Else if you really want to get closer to the 1000 mark:

The only cheaper alternative is a I7 5960x.

Solution
There are no single 12 core CPU's available in the price range you listed.

Best there is right now is a 6 core.
E3-2640. 6 core, 12 threads. Entire line of E3-26xx CPU's.
I7-5960X 6 core, 12 threads. I7-5930K 6 core, 12 thread. I7-5820K 4 core, 8 thread.

i7 5960x is a 8 core/16 thread cpu, the i7 5930k and i7 5820k 6 core/12 thread. For $1000 he could get a xeon E5-2650 v3. Or, which should be faster in the majority of tasks an i7 5960x which he could overclock.
