Will PCI Express 2.0 cards work on an old system with PCI Express x16 slot?

I have an old HP A1250n that i believe has the MSI MS-7184 motherboard. Don't really want to go buy a new pc and just want this one to run pretty decent for a while. I will not be gaming, but would like videos to play smoothly. It has 1GB memory, but ordered 2GB more that should be here soon. So that being said, it will have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3900, 3GB ram, and I will install a fresh copy of windows7 as soon as I get the memory installed to 3GB.

It only has integrated video graphics, and I am looking to get a better video card for cheap. It does have a PCI express x16 slot. But I have read a lot that people have had problems with certain cards not being reverse compatible when trying to use a 2.0 in a 1.0 designed board. Any thoughts please and thanks!

Do motherboards have a max ammount of memory they allow the video card to have? Also how significant are cuda cores?

EVGA GeForce 210 1gb, has 16 CUDA Cores

MSI GeForce 610 1GB, has 48 CUDA Cores.

Both cards are the same price $24. I know this is extremely cheap for a video card, but like I said, I just want something that will hopefully play movies/videos without lag. Any input? Thanks

I would say better use the onboard graphics. Those cards are the most basic ones. The bottom line of there families. I seriously doubt they would make any impact on anything you do in your PC.

There is no such regulation on the memory incorporated into the Graphic card. Motherboards have memory regulation on how much RAM you can put into it. But that's it.

Thank you for the input. I guess I'll just hope by upping the memory to 3GB will run it pretty smoothly. Prob best to save money and get a much newer pc that has more potential.
