Hi Everyone,

I'm new to upgrading PC's and thought it would be a good idea to get some advice before upgrading my CPU.

My current build is about 2 years old (other than the GPU):
PDU = Corsair CX500 (500W)
Motherboard = MSI 760GM-p23 (fx) (MSI 7641)
CPU = AMD FX4100 (Quad core)
GPU = NVIDIA GTX 970
RAM = 8GB
HDD = Seagate 1TB SATA

I'm looking at upgrading to an AMD FX9590 Black Edition (8 core) but I'm not sure if my current motherboard will be able to handle this as it is quite a leap from my current CPU. Is a new moherboard going to be necessary?

As well as this I believe my PDU should be able to handle it, I think the GPU needs around 140W and the new CPU 220W, but I'm not dead sure what the other components will need. Should I be thinking about changing this as well?

Any advice that you could give would be greatly appreciated.

If you need any other details please let me know.

Many thanks,

Tom.

Power supply is woefully inadequate for running an FX-9590 as well.

They are a waste of money anyway. Cheaper to just get an FX-8320 and overclock it.

Regardless, for this drastic of an upgrade, I would go ahead and switch to Intel.

Not to mention you need at least a H100i to cool a fx 9590. Also, 220w isn't the power draw but the thermal design power. A fx 9590 can very well draw 400 watts. Amd themselves recommend at least a 1000w psu for it (ok, 750w quality psu would be enough with a single gpu).

That price is the kit with the water cooler.

Most builds I see have an 850W or higher supply. And GPUs can have some serious spikes as well. CX500 is a fine supply for your average user. Overclocking and high end gaming, not so much.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've taken a look at the support list for my motherboard and it looks like the best cpu possible without switching are the fx8320E.

I'll do some more research into this but I think either going for a 990fx and fx8320 (or 8350) or switching to Intel are the best options.

A 990fx motherboard should be able to handle it though?

I wasn't aware that all fx cpus would cripple it. I was under the impression that, as long as the cpu was powerful enough, an amd or Intel would suffice. That being said if it is really the case that Intel will get much better performance out of the 970 then I would be prepared to switch. Only thought of amd as that is my current setup.

Yes, a 990fx board would handle it.

You're right, as long as the cpu is powerful enough, amd or intel doesn't matter. It just happens that amd has not released new cpus for 4 years - nothing strong enough for todays standards.

Thanks for the information on amd. I didn't realise that they hadn't released any for a while. If that's the case then I'll most likely switch to Intel (this is the first system I've had which used amd). Obviously it'll depend on my system but typically would the ram chip need replacing when switching between amd and Intel?
