I dropped my 1Tb WD passport external drive, my lop top registered as local disk, not as passport like it used to; now suggested me to format disk in order to open it, if I formatted it, I will be able to see my videos and pictures again?

Hi there Leo72,

That's really bad. :(
Most probably the drive got physically damaged. So, it is possible that you will not even be able to format it(you shouldn't format it for now as it can be data destructive).

Apart from that, you can go to Disk Management and see how is the drive recognized over there. Does it have partitions and/or file system?
I guess you can use some partition/data recovery tool and try to access the drive.

In case the data on the drive is really important, I would say that you will need to contact a data recovery company.
You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=SHjaQ4

Hope this will help,

Thank you very much for your assistance D_Know_WD, on my computer shows up as "local disk" but wont open. I haven't checked Disk Management, I guess I will and if it doesn't work I will have to check a data recovery company since those files are emotionally important to my family. Thanks again for the input.
