Safest way to physically clean the contact pins

Solution
It sounds like minor oxidation (patina). This will not affect conductivity, so I wouldn't attempt to clean it. If it's foreign dirt, try blasting off with compressed air (comes in a can at most office supply stores).

If you really want/need to clean the oxidation, though, after making sure you ground yourself, you can use a cotton swab and a mixture of baking soda and water- this will clean oxidation very quickly. Just make sure you dry the metal well with a dry cotton swab.
