I'm trying to reason myself to not buy Mac for my next machine. My 2011 MBP is wearing out, but at the same time demands have risen a bit.
So I'm trying to put together a build that can handle the following:

- 4K video editing and grading (Premier Pro and DaVinci Resolve)
- Redering (C4D Maya etc)
- And then compositing. (AE)

I will NOT be gaming on this machine.

So far I've tried to put together what I could deduce was decent stuff these days, but I'm very open for suggestions that I can buy in that same shop my link goes to.

In regards to the hard drives, you'll notice I have 4 listed.... they are for OS/source/export/scratch purposes.

Admirable
Change GPU GTX 970 to either 295x2 if you can afford it or R9 390x coz they are better at 4k. R9 390x is equal or even better than GTX 980 from nvidia. You have to change your motherboard and get x99 one because the one you chose is not compatible with that cpu. I suggest MSI X99S Gaming 7 or if you have the money for it Asus SABERTOOTH X99, or even better Asus X99-DELUXE.

The socket 1150 motherboard won't work with a socket LGA 2011 v3 CPU; you need to select a compatible motherboard like the ASRock Fatal1ty X99X Killer. LGA 2011 v3 motherboards require DDR4 memory; therefore you also need to select a different memory kit (DDR4 instead of DDR3).

Your build was incompatible. The 5930k is an X99 build which has no real benifit over the 5820K except PCIE lanes. The revised build is above.

Oh and I have no idea what kind of tower these things would fit in

Yeah I just saw that it seems the 390x is just a rebrand of the 290x... kinda confusing.

But I hope I don't piss anyone off but I've spent some time digging around, and found out that Maya doesn't agree with the Radeon cards, so I'm skipping that completely and chipping out instead.

So I currently am sitting with this build idea:

  • Casing: Fractal Design Define R5 - ATX Black

    Mainboard: ASRock X99 Extreme4 - ATX LGA2011-v3 socket

    CPU cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 412S processor-cooler - 120mm

    Processor: Intel Core i7 5930K / 3.5 GHz Processor - LGA2011-v3 socket (6 cores)

    Graphics: Gigabyte GV-NTITANXD5-12GD-B - GF-GTXTITANX 12GB

    Ram: Kingston HyperX Predator - 4x8GB DDR4 2133MHz PC4-17000 CL13

    HD 1 (OS / Apps): Samsung 850 EVO MZ-75E500 - 2.5″ SATA-600 500GB

    HD 2 (Workfiles and proj): Samsung 850 PRO MZ-7KE1T0BW - 2.5″ SATA-600 1TB

Power supply: CoolerMaster Silent Pro M2 850W - 135 mm fan

    Monitor: Dell P2715Q - 27″ 6ms Black

Now I just read about the 980ti... from the looks of the review done here, it almost seems silly to get the Titan when the 980ti is that good?
Would save me a little cash I could put into a better monitor.

Yeah I guess. The 980Ti is a gaming card more of and the Titan X is a good gaming card too but is a cross between normal GTX cards and quaddro.

The 980Ti is the best from a gaming bang for buck prospective but the Titan X is a good production card too!

That's just it... but are you sure about the 25%? I saw the review bench test done by Toms and from that it seemed to be pretty much on par with Titan in every test

Gaming wise yeah, production wise you'd want to look at the Titan or a quaddro.

The Titan is a better card but the 980 Ti is way more efficient for the cost. Personally I would buy a 980 Ti If i were you but I thought I'd lay out the cards for you :)

I appreciate that very much :) Bleh... just makes me think again. But I will most likely end up choosing the 980ti for now, I figure I can always go up later on.

Cheers guys

So I ended up getting a build like this and it's been great so far:

- i7 5930K 3.5
- MSI GTX 980 ti
- Asrock x99 extreme 4
- Noctua cooler
- 1x 512gb SSD for OS and apps
- 1x 1tb SSD for work files and cache
- 1x 4tb 7200rpm drive for storage
- Fractal Design R5
- 32gb kingston 2133mhz
- Windows 8.1 Pro

and then I took a chance on a pci expansion board for thunderbolt.
Since I couldn't find the Asrock AIC anywhere in Denmark, I went on a limb with the Asus ThunderboltEX II and after some driver fidling it ended up actually working. However I have to connect the drive before I turn on the computer. I'm using the GoFlex to attach my transport drive.

So far not a single hitch and DaVinci Resolve is playing back more than 25fps for 1080p files with several nodes attached.
