Hello guys,

I've been struggling those last days trying to decide which path i should choose concerning my FX 4300.

Originally, I was thinking on the FX8350 since it has a good price by the performance it offers and there's Directx 12 miracle in the horizon. - the problem here is that i think i would need a watercooler (thinking about H80i) my gaming room is pretty hot reaching 86 ºF on summer.

In the other hand, is i5 4690K, seems to perform better (mostly in single core apps), uses almost half of the energy and would not need the watercooler (i'm guessing this).

My actual mobo was bought with one objective "hold everything together", so i'm changing it too. If AMD was the answer, i'd go with the MSI 970 Gaming.

My dilemma here is that, in price terms:

FX8350+H80i = i5 4690K

But what about performance? Would the i5 be that better? Better enough to lose hopes on Directx 12 using high core number?

Did I missed something? Am I thinking right?

Thank you, and sorry for the long text!!

Directx 12 MAY make use of the extra weak cores amd fx chips have which will increase performance. Developers might be lazy and not even make use of dx12 fully. Even if directx 12 makes a good use of the extra weak cores it still probably wont be better than an i5 (just a guess though really we have to wait and see) I don't think it justifies buying a brand new,old am3 + fx cpu. The best thing to do would be to wait for sky lake cpus and get one of those.

So, guess that even in dx12 this i5 may perform equal or more than the 8350.

What about its stock cooler? I'm worried here because my fx4300 was shutting down during gameplay due to high temperatures and I would not like to see it happening again.

if you are getting the 8350, get an aftermarket cooler, I have a 8350, they get hot.

Yes fx chips run pretty hot, get a hyper 212 evo it's the go to cpu cooler and it performs best for its ~$35 price. But if you do choose to upgrade to skylake which is on lga 1151 I do not know if it will fit so you may have to buy another cooler unless you don't play do overclock because Intel cpus do not need aftermarket coolers as long as you don't overclock.
