is a 4790k worth the upgrade?

I really want to wait for zen and later cpus to upgrade from my 4690k. I do animation and some video editing with a lot of gaming. It's really expensive and seems to not be worth the $350 upgrade.

Solution
For gaming the 4690K often is faster than the 4790K. Do not upgrade until we see how DX12 impacts CPU performance, the 4690K is more than sufficient. Even then, probably wait for Zen.

How is it faster than the 4790k? I would think only if you overclock it then it would be faster than a stock 4790k. But yes do not upgrade to the 4790k, just be patient for the new line. Not worth upgrading if your not heavy into video editing

There is some overhead involved in the 4790K's hyperthreading, thus the 4690K gets slightly better single core performance.

Just look at the benchmarks, you'll see that they're neck and neck for gaming, with the 4690K coming out ahead on smaller titles.

Agreed, it's a waste of money really. I've got my i5 4690k clocked to 4.6GHz which is more than enough, I could easily go a bit higher, but you simply don't need it. I can play games fine, and have no trouble multitasking. As for video rendering, it's not too bad, but I really don't think its worth shelling out $350 when both Skylake and of course Zen is out next year. That $350 your saving now could go towards that new chip your going to buy, or even some other hardware that you want.

Personally, I'm sticking with Intel and waiting for Skylake before upgrading, just due to averagely better single core performance, and Skylake is the Tock in Intel's CPU cycle which should see a better increase that Broadlake did.
