Is an AMD x4 860k and R9 280x a good combo?

Hey guys, this is a pretty simple question. I'm going to do some light gameplay recording and some video editing work with it. I will also be playing games such as DOTA 2, NBA 2K15, GTA V and Fallout 4 when that comes out on a 900p monitor on high-max settings (Also obviously I will be doing some web browsing and school work). Yes I know that the x4 860k has virtually no upgrade path, but I feel like if this build can last 3-4 years, then I could probably upgrade to intel with that $200 processor and $70 motherboard which will definitely be worth it when the time comes. Will the X4 860k and R9 280x be a really good combo for my needs for the next 3-4 years?

Solution
the 860k will bottleneck the 280x in games like GTA V or anything cpu intensive, not so badly though that it wont be an upgrade over say a 270x.

If you don't already have the 860k I would just go with a different platform.
If you do have the 860k I would hold off for a month or two if you can and then the 280x will be even cheaper due to the 300 series cards.

Yes, that's a fairly balanced combination. You will be able to Max out nearly every game at 900p at good framerate. For video editing, 16GB or RAM will be helpful as well. In that vein, an FX-6300 will perform better than the 860K if you can afford it.

Cheers!

X4 860k is a great really low-budget cpu right now.
Its good enough for bary-minimal playable GTA5 and any other game that requires 4 threads for smooth gameplay.
Because GTA5 makes Intel Pentium a bad option.

My suggestion? Get a better cpu sub-system and a R9-270x.
But 860k + R9 280x is not a bad path either.

I think the athlon x4 860k with a r9 280x is a good combo. Sure, it would get about 5 less average fps than an i5 with that gpu on some titles. But for $100 less and not noticeable frame rates gain unless I benchmark the gpu, it's a worthy tradeoff.

If you want a better upgrade path, you may consider intel's i3. It will run games slightly better than the athlon. Be aware though for few games such as far cry 4 which will require a fix to run on dual cores.

Understand that you'll be bottlenecked pretty heavily, though you can still get excellent performance in the games you play. 1440p's also a breeze.

Why don't you go look up Awesomesauce Network's Overkill Console Killer? Those are the parts he used.
