Is 1440p worth it over 1080p?

Right now I have a HD 7950 which I plan to upgrade. I could either buy something like a R9 290 and just fit in a 1440p monitor or I could buy a Fury air cooled and get a 1440p next year.
Or I could buy a 390 and get a IPS 1080p display.
Which one would be the best option?

I personally think 1440p is worth it, I like using it way more than regular 1080p. Also at 1440p and below your probably better off with the 970 compared to the R9 2XX and 3XX series. I am curious to see how the fury benchmarks though.

I'd rather buy a 390 for the same price than get a crippled 970 if I was going to buy a second 1080p or go 1440p. That extra VRAM does help.

Well I can afford to buy the fury for about 550 euro and just get a 1440p next year.
I might be able to get the 1440p sooner, depends if I can get some work this summer or not.

The 8GB 390X only scores ~10% better than the 4GB 290X and can be at least just easily be explained by the 390X's 20% faster memory clock.

As for OP's 1080p vs 1440p dilemma, it is all a matter of personnal preference. Personally, I do not care about resolution for gaming, so I would just go with 1080p if that was the only use I had for it - cheaper to buy, cheaper to run smoother as well.
