I have the Ranger and its a great motherboard the Hero is better and more future proof. You can always just upgrade the ram but upgrading a mobo is hard af bcuz of new windows and stuff so go with the Hero and 8 gb of ram 2 sticks of 4GB so you can run dual channel tho

No such thing as future proofed. Never will be. The computer industry is constantly creating new things and replacing old things.

If you buy a motherboard and CPU now, the next time you want to update your CPU, you will need to also buy a new motherboard again. Intel, later this year, will be switching from the 1150 socket to the 1151 socket. AMD on the other hand next year will be releasing a Zen CPU/APU, and all of those will use a new AM4 socket.

So your future proof idea just flies out the door if you buy something right now.

Now, I read up on both motherboards. They are almost clones of each other. So if you can afford to put 16GB on the asus maximus VII ranger, get that one.

Mark i strongly disagree if our buddy here wants to stick with what he buys for 4 years a motherboard with 8 SATA ports is better than a motherboard with 6 SATA ports

But would he really be even running more than 6 SATA appliances? Probably he won't be running even 4.
So it does not matter how many SATA ports there is when barely half of them will be used.

Also, as Mark said: no such thing as future-proof. Only future-compatible.
Depending of his cpu and gpu, he is future-compatible for 3-4 years.

Speaking of which: what cpu and gpu you have, OP?

Games are getting bigger and over time if you download lots of game your HDD will fill up and not everyone buys 6TB HDD so if he buys like a 1TB every year has 2 SSD's and 1 Optical drive thats 7 and maybe another SSD thats 8

I've been in this business for 35 years. I have never used more than 3 hard drives and 2 optical drives in a single PC. In a server, yes. This guy is not setting up a server.

So what the heck would you need 8 SATA ports for? 1 SSD, maybe 2 hard drives, and maybe an optical drive. Nothing this guy talks about says to me that he would ever need more than 6 SATA ports.

No one would be buying 2 SSDs unless they are going for something extreme.
The SSD would just be upgraded to newer, bigger one later.
Optical drive may be used, but they are dying and barely needed. Can install everything with USB stick.

At most it is:

1 optical drive
1 SSD
2 HDD.

1TB HDD is more than enough for games and by the time games are too big, he would be upgrading anyway.
Right now biggest games will take 100Gb. That's only 10% of 1Tb. I doubt OP would be installing 10 of such games, not to mention there isn't even that many games which will take that much (without mods).
Also in 3-4 years, the game sizes won't grow THAT much. At most, after 4 years, biggest game will take 150GB.

i7 4790k
gtx 760

4790k but not overclocking?
That's a waste too.

You will do fine with regular H97 or Z97 motherboard.
Maximus motherboards are for overclockers.
Regular Z97 would be enough yet make it possible to do some overclocking when you decide so.
If you already have such motherboard, then just buy RAM and new gpu.

the i7 4790k is overkill i know that the gpu is SH#TTY but i will change this later like in 1 year
i will buy the 980i
now, about my question i just will go with booth instead 16gb ram and vii hero

3x 4K does NOT equal 12K. It doesn't work that way.

That makes 11520x2160.
12k would be 11520x6480

That setup is closer to 6.5k.

11520x2160 = 24883200 pixels
6400x3600 = 23040000 pixels

what is better the Hero or the deluxe ?

Both are really nice motherboards. The ROG boards are more focused on people that want to overclock. The deluxe still allows for overclocking, but does not have the special red/color coloring, and some of the overclocking features. If you are not going to overclock, go with the Deluxe.
