UPDATE - I've run Passmark's burn in test several times now with no errors, and the problem persists regardless of the configuration of my GPUs, one or the other, SLI enabled or disabled.

So far, I have yet to be able to run it extensively at another refresh rate or cable type (I'm currently at 144hz using displayport) so I can try that too, though I confess I have no idea what it would mean if that changed things and the problem left?

Thanks for your answer - I hope I can solve this. I'll update again as I'm about to try rolling back my driver.

Preface - My computer's components are (I'm not certain which ones are actually important, so I've just listed all of them):

OS
Windows 8.1 64
CPU
Intel i7 4790k at stock readings w/ NZXT Kraken cooler
RAM
16GB Crucial Ballistix Ram @ 1600
GPU
2-Way SLI EVGA GTX 970
STORAGE
Intel SSD
WD Raptor
Seagate 1TB
POWER
EVGA Supernova G2 750 gold
Display
ASUS VG248QE 1080P @ 144hz

I am having an issue with my PC. My display driver occasionally crashes, from the beginning of this issue until now, it's been slightly different - at first, it crashed several times within a second, as I could use the Event Viewer in Windows 8 to see a chain of six Display Driver Error entries in the viewer. Lately, it's been happening once, but I've been dealing with it for around a month now, and I have RMA'd around half of my components trying to fix it.

The real problem with this is that sometimes, instead of the driver just crashing and recovering, it apparently will not recover, and my monitor just displays "No Signal" and won't show anything unless I restart my computer or plug the displayport cable in and out several times. This is a very frustrating problem.

To date, I have RMA'd both of my graphics cards, my PSU, and my motherboard.

I've run one instance of Memtest86 that I let run for 16 hours and several passes, with no errors reported; though I don't necessarily think the RAM is perfect or isn't possibly the source of the problem.

I have no idea how to test my CPU for this recurrence, as the problem is very hard to replicate - it's less frequent now than it was at the beginning, but it still happens and is very frustrating. The absolute most reliable test I have is to randomly open the League of Legends "Launcher" - it's not the only thing that's ever been opened and then I had the problem, Chrome is the other most frequent thing I'd been using when the problem happened, and the very first time, I simply tried to wake the computer from sleep, which is why I now suspect the ram may not entirely innocent, but I have not tried to put the computer to sleep since the very first time this problem happened.

Because I have replaced so many parts, I'm concerned that I will never figure out this issue, as most people tell me CPUs are rarely bad, but the CPU does some measure of communicating with the GPUs in the PCI slots I believe, so a tech support person from EVGA told me it could be a CPU -> PCI E controller issue since opening the LoL launcher and using chrome are more CPU involved (and possibly ram?) than GPU, as the problem has never happened when I've been playing games or running any other 3D applications like an intense benchmark.

I'm also concerned it could have something to do with my resolution, as I am running a 1080P monitor with a native 144hz refresh rate, which I believe is somewhat uncommon. I have been told that the monitor is highly unlikely to be bad, as it works perfectly fine all the time, but somehow isn't getting a signal from the GPU when this happens - it definitely appears to be something with the video output rather than my monitor, but I've replaced BOTH of my cards, so I can't see it being one of them, and I tested them individually to eliminate SLI / multi-gpu as the problem.

I am at a complete loss here, and I have no idea what to do - I'm not sure if I should send for an RMA from Intel AND Crucial for the CPU and RAM, or if there's some way to determine if it's the CPU's interaction with the graphics cards, or if it's the RAM somehow? I would very much appreciate guidance as I have simply no idea what to do at this point.

Thank you for your time.

Solution
Time to do some testing.
Run a single 970 to see if it crashes during
Try a lower refresh rate to see if it crashes.

Run PassMark to test the CPU.

I would say possible PSU issue, but you RMA'd it.
