What advantages are they, considering that I can't really tell the difference in graphics between them and don''t need to play in HD?

And I have a laptop to play older games on (it can just run Skyrim at medium settings)?

And that the consoles are much cheaper...

Yeah, when we talk about cheaper games we are usually talking about Steam sales. Some games will also be about $10 cheaper at full price because on PC the publisher doesn't have to pay a licensing fee to Sony or Microsoft. Some publishers have started charging the same on PC as they do on console so they can pocket that extra license fee money. As such, the games aren't going to be hugely cheaper if you buy...

A Gaming PC enables better graphics, a higher framerate (smoother gameplay)
The main thing is the ability to customize games with mods. Games like Skyrim can become completely different games with the community creating modifications for them.

However, they can be much more expensive than a console. A PS4 renders games at JUST under 1080p, With decent graphics for just $399. A PC to meet the same fidelity will likely run you $550, with an investment of $1000 being what I would consider the most efficient in terms of performance for your dollar.

AKA, they can be much more expensive.

If you take gaming really seriously AND willing to spend you can run games with better graphics and resolution.

If you just want to game a console is better than any PC below say $1K because console can last you 10 years with no issues while PC would need to be upgraded.

However if you are willing to spend money PC can give a far better experience, like you can get a 4K monitor and 980TI and that beats any console........................but also cost as much as a mortgage payment.

So pick your poison.

The upfront cost will be more the for the PC, but for the games, you can save a lot of money on a pc than any console. Consoles, when released, are already about 2-5 years behind pcs. To upgrade a pc, you probably just replace the video card. On a console, you have to buy an entire console (next generation 5 years away).
And video graphics is always superior on a PC than any console. There are many articles about that. (video showing how different they are, including the new GTA 5 game).

PC Advantages:
- Higher resolutions and framerates and extra eyecandy if you have the graphics hardware that can handle it.
- More control options, eg. mouse, keyboard, controller, racing wheel, joystick, whatever you want.
- Backwards compatibility, unlike the new consoles which either don't have it (PS4) or where it will be patched in later for a limited selection of games (Xbox One) PC can play games made more than two years ago without you needing to spend more money on a 'remastered' version of the old game. This backwards compatibility can go all the way back to the 1980s with the use of DOSBox.
- No subscription fee to play online (unless you play World of Warcraft or one of the few other sub based MMOs still out there)
- Game genres that are either not present at all on consoles or only very poorly represented eg. Real Time Strategy, 4X Strategy, MMOs, MOBAs.

Console Advantages:
- Exclusive games
- Genres that aren't well represented on PC, namely JRPGs, Fighting Games, Spectacle Fighters.
- Lower cost of entry (though perhaps not lower overall cost when you factor in subscription fees and likely paying more for your games)
- No need to upgrade or replace your console while the current console generation lasts, barring a repeat of the Red Ring of Death or some other design flaw that kills your console shortly after the warranty period has expired.

You all say games are cheaper on consoles, is that just through steam sales?

Because I've been looking around sites, such as amazon, and found that most console games are cheaper...

E.g. Dying Light - Xbox One - £30
- PC - £38.27
- Steam - £39.99 (not including sale)
