I've downloaded 5 different Audio programs over the last 2/3 days trying to get something to recognise my headphones.

you must go to you folder option and click the check box "show system folders" and that folder will apear there is even a programsx86 folder
and did you make it into control panal?? search for control panel and then hit sound then set defalt speakers.

With those headphones, there is no software. What motherboard? If you have a Realtek alc1150 chip then fair enough. Otherwise, I'd just use the dac/amp.

What motherboard? Re-install the Realtek drivers from the mobo website.

Mobo: Gigabyte b85m-d3h.

UPDATE: The headphones and mic are present in the control panel when plugged into mobo USING THE DAC.

Why are they not there when plugged into the back using the splitter or into the side WITHOUT the dac?

You didn't understand, It doesn't work when plugged into WITHOUT the dac or when connected to splitter (audio/mic) also WITHOUT the dac.

I know this may sound odd, but some motherboard manufacturers do this for some reason.
Open the computer and locate the onboard Audio, have a look around in that area, pay attention to the labels next to any jumper pins in that area, you are looking for a jumper pin labeled "AUD" the jumper should be on the pin that has the 1 at the base, if it is on the pin that has the 0 at the base move the jumper over.
The jumper "AUD" is simply a 3 pin, on off switch telling the chip weather to send audio out to the jacks or not. Since it does not disable the chip the computer reads the device as enabled weather the jack is disabled or not.

DO NOT, move any jumper that is not labeled "AUD" you will be able to see the jumper label at the base of the jumper on the mother board with out removing the actual jumper.

Turn the power to the computer of at the mains 10 minutes before opening the computer, but leave it plugged in with the mains switch off. while you have the case of the computer open make sure you keep in constant contact with the case of the computer.
This will provide you with a ground so you don't accidently damage the computer through static discharge.
