how to cancel hard drive formatting?

There is no way to cancel it while it is formatting, if you could the hard drive would most likely be bricked. The power went out while I was formatting a USB stick once, it was unusable.

Hi there Mikax,
I assume that you want to interrupt the process as you have some data on the drive that you haven't backed up.
Even though you have most probably already formatted the drive, it may be possible to retrieve at least some of the data(unless it is not overwritten).
Scan the drive with some data recovery tool. Check this one for example: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
