mohamad dehghan,

The highest CPU scores in Passmark for E8400 , Q6600, and Q9400:

CPU:

E8400 = 3568

http://ark.intel.com/products/33910/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E8400-6M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB?q=E8400

Q6600 = 4840

http://ark.intel.com/products/29765/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q6600-8M-Cache-2_40-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB?q=q6600

Q9400 = 5018

http://ark.intel.com/products/35365/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9400-6M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

Please notice that the E8400 and Q9400 have a 45nm lithography- the number is the distance between the parts on the chip, while the Q6600 is 65nm. Check the model of motherboard and chipset and see if these CPU's may be used.

GPU:

The highest rated GTX 460: 2D = 1069 , 3D = 3385
The highest rated HD 7870: 2D = 1159 , 3D = 5046

If your going to drop this level of money into your systen, i suggest leaving lga 775 and buying intel lga 1150. Then upgrade from your 460 later as it is still a usable card at 1080p, but with lower settings compared to a 7870.

@LookItsRain A full upgrade will cost hundreds with RAM, Mobo and CPU. You can pick up those other CPU's from ebay for anywhere from $20-60. This seams like a great upgrade path for the price.

I would go with the q9400. Higher clock speed and quad core. If you can overclock then that would really make it a great upgrade. This are still very competitive cpu's for a low/mid range pc.

A new core2quad plus 7870(r9 270x) is around the same as a lga 1150, i3 is around 100 usd, mobo around 60 usd, ram around 50 usd and will have much much better performance over any core2quad.

the hd 7870 is a later upgrade. He can make a $60 upgrade now and save till he can get the whole system upgraded. The core2quad would be a huge upgrade from what he has now. If it wasnt a drop-in cpu I wouldnt recommend it, but he will see a large jump in performance for very low cost, vs the $220 solution you have (which doesn't even include a new gpu).

Performance jump will not be that "massive" going from a same generation dual to a same generation quad, there both very old.
