Hi,
I must admit that I have no experience in building custom desktop PCs and I hope this community can somehow provide some help. I will be mostly using it for programming, Data analysis (MatLab, R, etc) some image editing and music production software (e.g. Cakewalk), and gaming. I have a price ceiling of £ 800 (I live in Britain) not considering a monitor and the following specs come at £786.04 inc VAT:

- Intel Core i5-4460 Quad Core 3.2GHz HD 4600 6MB Cache 84W Processor

- Kingston ValueRAM 16GB 2X8GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz PC3-12800

- Asus Z97-P Motherboard 5th/4th Gen Core i7/i5/i3/Pentium/Celeron 1150 Z97 ATX RAID Gigabit LAN (Integrated Intel HD Graphics)

- Seagate 7200.14 1TB SATA III 3.5" HDD Drive - 7200RPMrpm, 64MB

- Samsung SH-224DB DVD Writer Optical Drive

- CiT 2206 Black Midi Case

- Corsair CX600M Builder Series 600 Watt ATX Modular Power Supply Unit

- Kingston SSDNow V300 2.5" 240GB SATA III Solid State Drive

- Be Quiet! BK010 Shadow Rock Slim CPU Cooler

- Seagate 7200.14 1TB SATA III 3.5" HDD Drive - 7200RPMrpm, 64MB

- EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GT 740 2GB Superclocked Edition Graphics Card

- Creative Sound Blaster Z PCI-E Sound Card

- TP-Link TL-WN781ND 150Mbps PCI Express WiFi Adapter

Would this configuration fit my needs? Any recommendation/suggestion is more than welcome!

Thank you,

I.

I took the time and build a PC for you. In comparison to yours it will be MUCH faster sporting an I7 with hyperthreading which is a huge boost for the applications and the work you will do. You don't need a GPU, the integrated GPU of the 4790 is better than the GT 740 you mentioned. I put a higher quality and faster SSD and a better CPU cooler. Also a much better case with better cooling and cable management. All these at just 717 pounds! It will be an asbolute SPEED DEMON. Check this out:

This is a great configuration, thanks. It looks like I can stay within my £800 budget and then add the following monitor as a mid-level one:
