Hi Guys, I have just upgraded to the new X99 Platform, The MSI X99S Gaming ACK to be exact along with the i7 5820k v3 cpu. I also added 2 Gigabyte Windforce gtx 960`s running in SLI, And here lies my problem. When I checked bios it informed me that the GPU`s are running 8*8 instead of 16*8. I understand that the 5820k only has 28 PCI`e lanes but surely I should be able to at least get 16*8*4 from this cpu. Am I correct!

FYI, PCI`e slots 1 & 4 are *16 on my mobo.

Any information you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Regards James

That CPU can only run up to 3 nvidia cards in SLI. It divides the lanes into 8x8x8. You should be able to get 16x8 with only two cards, but even if you arent I wouldnt worry. There is virtually no performance difference between 16x and 8x.

Nvidia cards require a minimum of 8 pcie lanes per card.

The documentation MSI provides for this board is pretty crappy unfortunately, which is probably where the confusion comes from. First, to be clear, ALL your PCIE ports are physically x16 slots. The logical lanes assigned to those ports are CPU dependent; in your case, 28 lanes as you know.
Now, their product page does in fact advertise this board as being capable of x16 and x8 speeds using the one and four slots, but the manual contradicts this and says it will only go x8 x8 (as well, the product page clearly indicates it can run 4 way SLI at x8 x8 x8 x4 speeds but the manual says that it can only run 3 way sli).
Given the clear contradictions in MSI's own documentation on what this board can actually do, I personally would just return it and get an ASrock WS-E for the same price; dual PLX chips make it a moot point.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I have read that there is not much gain to be had at 16*8. However as msi says that it will run in that configuration with that cpu then surely that should be the case when you consider this is there top of the range gaming mobo. Again thanks for the reply, Much appreciated!

Hi, I did not know about the contradictions you state as I am not one for reading manuals but thanks for the info, As I have had this mobo a couple of months a return is not a option. Being new to the intel platform I did not know about PLX chips on workstations until recently so I will keep my rig for now until I can afford a new W.S. mobo.

Thank you for the reply & obvious research you have done to answer my post, Much appreciated!
