Is this a good build for less than £850

Hi,

Looking for a gaming build around £700-850 (without monitor/keyboard/mouse)

Games I play are witcher 3/skyrim/batman/mass effect/bioshock/Battle field/crysis/tomb raider etc

I would like to play these games on high settings, medium is ok too...especially witcher 3.

Build so far:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor £178
Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard £65
Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory £51
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive £49
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive £37
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Twin Frozr V Video Card £270
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply £59
OS: Microsoft Windows 8.1 OEM (64-bit) £75

total £784

Any comments or improvements that I could make within the £700-850?

Apparently for me the cooler that comes with CPU will be ok...so should leave upgrading for now, and buy later if I need it.

I would be grateful for opinions on these questions:

1) I do not plan to overclock or SLI - So is the motherboard I picked a good fit for this build or is there a better alternative that are better priced for my requirements? Just need a well built/reliable board that does the job well and aids playing those sorts of games.

2) Will this build be able to handle the games I mentioned on high settings?

3) Still looking for a case. I like the idea of a window case, but I am not too fussed about color matching all my components so it may not look all that through the window.

Could you let me know if you think the components I picked would look nice through a window case after I build it - and if it does, then suggest a window case...and if not then suggest a standard case. Don't want to spend a lot on the case, just a good strong case that will house all my components nicely. Looking to spend £30-75

4) Monitor - Looking for a 23''-24'' desktop monitor. Hoping to get it for under £150
I am not 100% sure what to look for in monitors so would be grateful if you could give me a little explanation of the options you suggest or what to look for in monitors.

5) I checked the compatibility of all these components and there doesn't seem to be an issue, but as this is my first build, I wanted to confirm that I have all the right number of ports etc to put this build together?

6) A little confused about sound and internet access. Am I right in saying that I won't need anything extra in order to connect to the internet via Ethernet cable and play sound through normal speakers (I am not a audiophile, as long as there is decent sound I am happy).

For Wifi I will need something extra?

Sorry for the wall of text.

Thank you

This is a good build, but based on your comments...

1) If you don't plan to overclock at all, then there's no reason to get the "k" variant of the CPU and a Z97 board. You could get the 4690 and an H97 board for cheaper.

2) You can play everything on high settings at 1080p/60Hz.

3) I have the Corsair 500R, and I've enjoyed it. I also want to try the Fractal Design R4 or R5, which comes in with a windowed option. Your mobo appears to be blue while the GPU is red. I can't really comment on this as I've never considered color matching my components, but I guess if I wanted to get a windowed case I would choose a case theme/color. Just worry about function/price over aesthetics IMO.

4) For monitors just pick the resolution and refresh...

4) For monitors just pick the resolution and refresh rate you want and go with something well-reviewed. There's TN vs. IPS, contrast ratio, and color fidelity to consider as well. I'll put one in the final build.

5) Everything is compatible.

6) The mobo will have an ethernet port and onboard sound. Onboard sound on modern boards is pretty good, no sound card necessary unless you're an audiophile. For wifi you can buy a wifi adapter PCI card; they're cheap.

Final build with changes and an example case, monitor, and wifi adapter...

Thanks for your reply jsgrant31.

The motherboard you suggested is a fair bit more expensive than the one I picked - is there a cheaper board that meets my requirements? Also will the motherboard in my price range effect the gaming performance a great deal? or are the different boards likely to provide similar performance in the £50-70 range?

So I mean will the Z97 board I picked provide much better/worse performance than a H97?

I can't seem to get my head round what the differences is between motherboards and what exactly I am looking to get for my build.

I like the case, but was wondering if there is a cheaper one out there...not too cheap but just around £50-60 mark. I am with you on looking at function/price rather than how cool it looks. Will look for myself too just give me a heads up on what brands to look at to get me going.

Monitor looks good. Would you say that 24'' is better than 23'', or not much difference.

Apologies. I overlooked something. H97 boards will only support up to 1600 MHz RAM, so your 1866 would be a waste. Really you could just go with 1600 MHz and save a little bit of money. You won't see much of a difference in gaming.

An H97 board won't hurt you on performance. You just can't overclock, which you've stated you don't want to do.

There are cheaper cases. Updated it in the build below.

For the monitor I would personally worry about the contrast ratio and colors over 23" vs. 24". The monitor I put in is just an example of a well-reviewed monitor.

But is it fine to stick with the MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 and sniper memory?

I like G.Skill product a little better you see.

Or are you saying that I will not make use of the 1866.

I understand that there isn't much difference between 1600 and 1866

I have a couple IPS monitors and I've enjoyed them. I would say it's worth it. It's more expensive than TN right now though. It really depends on what you want vs. what you're willing to pay for.

If you want the Z97 board and GSkill memory that's fine. I only recommended the H97 because IMO you don't get a Z97 board unless you plan to overclock at some point. But everything will still work together.
