How much does fps really matter in multiplayer shooters like tf2?

I've always wondered how much my fps matters compared to the other players. I usually run at about 40-60 fps when I play tf2. People typically will have higher fps than me, and i just wonder if my lower fps is affecting my relative gameplay if that makes sense. Do other people have a greater advantage because they can "see" more than I can? Do i have a disadvantage cause i see less? Or does it not really matter at all?

30 fps is considered playable. Everything below 30 fps is laggy, and you have more chance of getting a headshot than getting a kill. So yes, FPS does matter, the more you have, the better experience you will have.

as long as you are not getting stuttering and frame drops you wouldnt have more or less of an advantage with 40+ fps. after 60 it just comes down to the game looking smoother and almost gives you a sense that things are moving faster. over 60 fps is more of a luxury. you wouldnt see less unless you were to drop below 30 fps. a movie is 24 fps btw.
