Since day one (29th of may) I have had the same problem which I will describe below. Input, particularly possible suggestions to solution or the cause(s) of this problem, are very welcome and appreciated!

Pressing the startup button the PC will boot to the American Megatrends logo and the bootup sequence will halt at this point. I have no option to go into the bios. This happens when my monitor is on standby and the pc is connected through hdmi. Also, when the bootup halts at the logo mentioned above and I press the reset button the PC will boot into Windows 8.1.

The situation is different when my monitor isn't on standby but totally turned off. If I turn on my pc with the monitor turned off completely the PC will boot into Windows 8.1.

Hope someone can help me out here :)

My setup:
- Sharkoon T9 Value case
- Coolmaster G650 M
- Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 mobo
- Toshiba 1tb hdd
- MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G
- Intel i5-4460 processor with standard vent
- Crucial D3 8GB-9 BX Sport K2 Cru
- Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE
- Windows 8.1 64bit OEM
- Monitor LG W2453v-PF

Solution
I think I would start here by replacing the HDMI cable since it seems from the description that the PC is receiving a initial signal sequence from the monitor it can't decipher (could be loose wires inside the cable, bad shielding or something of the like causing that).
At least that's where I would start simply from the description

Sadly, replacing the hdmi cable with 2 different ones didn't change the startup problem. Furthermore, the cable seemed fine when I used it for my laptop when connected with my LG monitor. So, this probably means the problem isn't the cable(s) and/or the monitor?

Could this mean that the boot up problem is the GTX card because this sequence you mentioned in your reply could not be completed?

The symptoms would seem to fit that scenario also but it also fits a lot of other possible problems.
Does everything operate properly when used with DVI or VGA cables? Have you tried that? What about without graphics card in place, using the motherboard's HDMI?

Well, I have tried using DVI-D SL and it seems that my pc boots into Windows 8.1 with the monitor on standby but without showing the bios screen. Mind you, these bootups are performed during extensive use of the pc which equals warm boot-ups (?) I think. Sunday morning I will try a cold boot up and I am very curious to see whether the problems I've encountered while using hdmi persists when using DVI-D.

One problem I have, is the fact that my pc was build by a professional shop. This means that opening the case will render the shops warranty void so the last suggestion you gave won't be something I could test unfortunately.

Still, progress has been made so I am very grateful for your help. I will report my findings sunday morning.

After about 7 or 8 hours of inactivity the pc booted right into Windows 8.1 without any problems with the monitor in standby but without showing the bios option before booting into Windows just like last night.

Is that normal for Windows 8.1 or is this a symptom of the problem I am having with my pc? Have been using Windows 7 for years now and I always got the bios option.

So, could it be that the problem lies with the hdmi port on the GTX card? For me, at least, it seems to suggest that seeing that the DVI connection boots without any problems.
