finally swapping to ddr4, planning to get asus x99 deluxe, 5960x and 16gb of ddr4, will I need to re install win with a new cpu mobo and ram? if so how do I do this without wiping my ssd?
I've found Windows 8/8.1 to be very forgiving of hardware. You can probably connect it and Windows 8 will boot normally. You will have to reactivate though and reinstall Chipset/Other Drivers.
Additionally this will depend on the existing system Windows 8 is coming from. Make sure to set CSM/UEFI and Secure Boot to the same settings as the older system.
At minimum - you will probably need to "repair" the installation - this will work if you are lucky. With a new mobo, 99% of the time it requires either a repair installation or a full wipe of the drive.
